Sex Offender/Psychosexual Evaluation

A Sex Offender/Psychosexual Evaluation is a series of tests that assesses a person’s cognition and sexual health using scientific methodologies. The psychosexual evaluation assesses sexual preferences to determine if there is any sexual conduct that deviates from what is typically regarded normal and, if pursued, is prohibited. Examples of this type of conduct include a desire for children, family members, or extramarital sex. The examination also assists in determining a person’s likelihood of reoffending and the most suitable course of action. Sex Offender/Psychosexual assessments are given to both adults and children can be utilized in both civil and criminal courtrooms. Within appropriate consent, this evaluation also allows review of legal, mental health/medical/substance use history and interviewing of “collateral contacts”. “Collateral contacts” can be practically anyone, such as daycare, family friends, employers, therapists.

Psychosexual evaluations consist of the following components:

  • Clinical Interview
  • Psychometric Tests
  • Clinical Assessment of Sexual Arousal and Behavior
  • Risk assessment

The evaluator will inquire about the client’s past romantic relationships, educational background, any mental health issues, and family history. The evaluator will make notes on his or her initial impressions and any observations on the client as the client discusses the claims. The evaluator may occasionally conduct collateral clinical interviews with a client’s family members.

The psychometric assessments include multi-item objective examinations such as an personality inventory that is computer-scored such and an intelligence test, also known as an IQ test. The IQ test is used to assess the client’s intellectual abilities and determine whether the patient can handle the mental demands of treatment. It is also used to identify psychopathic issues and is followed by a sexual inventory, which is a thorough assessment of the patient’s sexual history, background, and development.

What To Expect: Our Sex Offender/Psychosexual Evaluations are conducted in three parts, (1) testing and evaluation and (2) clinical interview. The testing and evaluation are scheduled in sessions according to test. Thus, test sessions may range from 30 minutes to two hours. The duration of the test is dependent on the participation of the individual and test time requirements. Due to the extensiveness of each test, psychometric/psychosexual tests are often scheduled on different days. The patient must both complete testing and evaluation prior to the clinical interview. After the two parts of the evaluation is complete, it takes roughly three (3) months for the report to be transcribed and compiled. In some instances, it may take six (6) months. This is determined by reports in waiting.
